Operational Security Reminder

Just a quick reminder to anyone who posts to this Web site.  This Web site is open to the public and is occasionally visited by Copyright Troll attorneys, their staff, and content owners.  Please do not let that fact deter you from posting here.  Saying that, it is also your responsibilities to protect yourself from inadvertent discovery.  I will edit comments (when possible) that disclose too much personal and/or case specifics.  Note: depending on what I’m doing, I may not be able to edit posts for hours after they are made.

Identifying Information

Posting the fact that you are part of a mass-Doe case and giving the case number is usually not a problem.  Telling us you are Doe #3, IP address 168.192.213.22 is not recommended.  If/When the troll gets the ISP subscriber information (they often do); they will be able to correlate anything you posted.  Even if you only mention you are part of a specific case and which ISP you have, it helps narrow down the possibilities.  Just be mindful of how much information and what you say.  For most of us, the full details of your situation are not needed to understand your post.  If you have information that you think needs to get out (especially case documents), please contact me.  I have been known to write articles based off submissions/recommendations and will be able to prevent inadvertent disclosure.  Please note I cannot do an article for every case/Doe out there.

Attorney Discussions

I would not recommend disclosing on this site the “details” of any discussions you have with an attorney.  Most attorneys tailor their recommendations/advice to the specifics of the individuals.  If you discuss specific amounts of a settlement, pending settlement, ongoing discussions, etc., you could jeopardize the negotiations (for you and other Does in the cases).  The Trolls are very fond of their settlements and if they determine you are responsible for making their life less “profitable,” they could repay you in kind.  Myself, SJD and others are recipients of such actions – govern yourself accordingly.  😉

P.S. I have added a new page to the site – BT Case Openings Database

About DieTrollDie

I'm one of the many 'John Does' (200,000+ & growing in the US) who Copyright Trolls have threatened with a civil law suit unless they are paid off. What is a Copyright Troll? Check out the Electronic Frontier Foundation link - http://www.eff.org/issues/copyright-trolls

  1. that anonymous coward says:

Having had to send emails to get info redacted from the site(s), I second this idea.

    An addendum –
Your name – not that important to us, but it can and will be used by a troll to try and narrow down the list of people to focus more pressure on. Don’t use the nickname your called on the FaceBook etc. Come up with a new one. People can post anonymously, but its very hard to discuss things when everyone is named Anonymous, and it gets confusing.

Your City,State, Street – No, No, No.

Posting your email and asking someone to contact you – Ummm NO.

I know its hard to do sometimes, but consider ‘is what I am about to say something that can be used to figure out who I am?’

The object lesson – Those people on Facebook who tell everyone they are going on vacation, and come home to a robbed house. Did all of Facebook need the details of when you’d be gone? Not really. Keep what you say as bare bones as possible.
